I checked over my appearance once more in the mirror as I headed out my bedroom door, snatching my handbag off my desk as I went. I braided my hair after this morning’s fight with Mac, and changed into a cropped black t-shirt, faded blue jeans, and my favorite black boots.

“Where are you headed to looking so cute, minx?” Kit called from the couch as I made my way towards the front door.

“A hot date,” I retorted with a wicked grin, pausing to catch his eye with my finger hovering above the door’s fingerprint scanner.

His eyes narrowed, his thumb skimming across the light stubble peppering his jaw. “Clearly a lie, seeing as I didn’t ask you out.”

“Bold of you to assume you’re my only suitor.” I shrugged.

“You wound me, babe. Although, I’m very aware I’m likely not your only suitor,” he said earnestly, switching off the television. “I’m a little bit jealous, though.”

“Pump the corny brakes.” I laughed. “I’m going for coffee with Kira.” I paused, meeting Kit’s puppy-dog eyes as he stared at me wistfully. “Do you want to come? I know she’d love to meet you.” To high-five me behind your back over the fact I’ve seen you naked, I mentally added.

“Say no more!” He answered enthusiastically, scrambling off of the couch. “I’m going to eat so much bacon and eggs, you’ll have to roll me back here.”

“The ETIA doesn’t need you?” I asked, thinking about how busy Kit had been lately chasing leads for our pending mission.

“A finder has gotta eat,” he grinned, his fingers warm on the exposed skin of my lower back as he beat me to scan his finger to open the door. I had to give it to him. I had a strict no dudes rule on our Kira—Vaida catch-ups, but something about the way he looked at me made me want to bring him. Was I becoming soft? As I glanced back at Kit following behind me, his eyes as warm as heated honey, I ignored that little niggling part of me that thought maybe I was forming a soft spot for the guy. I just hoped Kira wouldn’t mind my unplanned guest too much.

We walked the few short blocks to the cafe Kira had suggested, Kit filling me in on the upcoming mission as we went. There’d been sightings of Antarian Wolven down by docks of the East River. A wild species of extraterrestrial from Antara. The wolven looked somewhere between a greyhound dog and a hairless cat, small, thin creatures, yet they were incredibly fast and with a mouthful of sharp razor-like teeth. Whilst individually they weren’t the biggest threat to humanity, I shuddered to think what a pack of them would do to a cornered civilian. Creepy, wild alien dogs were a problem the people of our city didn’t need.

“Undoubtedly, some asshole Invader couldn’t control his exotic pets, and so he let them loose in our city.” Kit mused, shrugging his shoulders. “I’m just waiting on final intel. Don’t want to send my little huntress into a trap.
